Today I want to talk to you about how my practice networks with schools. Before we dive into the how, let's talk about the why.
Networking with school counselors as a private practice is great for several reasons. For one, it's a symbiotic relationship that benefits both parties. School counselors are pivotal in identifying students who may require specialized therapeutic support, thereby acting as a vital source of referrals for private practitioners. Secondly, collaborating with school counselors enhances your professional reputation within the educational community, establishing your practice as a reliable and credible resource for addressing students' emotional needs.

Now this^ is a big deal.
Why? Because it can lead to a steady stream of clients and build trust among parents and school staff alike.
Moreover, networking with school counselors allows you to stay informed about prevalent issues and trends in the academic environment, enabling you to tailor your therapeutic approach effectively. Enough about the why, let’s talk about the how…
So now that we have discussed the why let's talk about how we do it at Water's Edge Counseling. Every year when school starts we love to reach out to both the private and public school counselors with a little gift, our business card and information that we feel could be useful to them during the school year. This year that information comes to them in the form of a risk assessment worksheet along with an umbrella and custom business card.
Think about what you and your practice can offer them
We know that the thought of a child hurting themselves or others is one of the most difficult things a school counselor can face. For that reason, we created a worksheet letting counselors know what Water's Edge Counseling can do in those situations to help by offering a risk assessment.
Bring your brand to life
In addition to the risk assessment worksheet, we are giving counselors an umbrella with our Water's Edge Counseling shell on it as well as business cards that says, "When it storms, we've got you covered."
Notably, the delivery of these items is a group effort. We have scheduled the counselors in pairs to go to the schools when they are not in session and make introductions. This is not only more personable, but also a team building activity. I pay my clinicians their clinical hourly rate for this time and appreciate their involvement immensely. At Water's Edge Counseling, everything is a team effort and I'm fortunate to have a great team :)
